Republican Senator Wants to Roll Back Ban on Gays Serving in US Militaty

GOProud, a gay Tea Party organization, issued this statement immediately following the debate:
Tonight, Rick Santorum disrespected our brave men and women in uniform, and he owes Stephen Hill, the gay soldier who asked him the question about Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell repeal, an immediate apology.
That brave gay soldier is doing something Rick Santorum has never done – put his life on the line to defend our freedoms and our way of life. It is telling that Rick Santorum is so blinded by his anti-gay bigotry that he couldn’t even bring himself to thank that gay soldier for his service.
Stephen Hill is serving our country in Iraq, fighting a war Senator Santorum says he supports. How can Senator Santorum claim to support this war if he doesn’t support the brave men and women who are fighting it?”
LGBT | POV adds a quote from R. Clarke Cooper of the Log Cabin Republicans, a gay GOP organization:
Santorum’s shameful response to the combat soldier’s question regarding open service was incoherent and out of touch. America’s uniformed leaders support gays and lesbians serving alongside their colleagues with dignity and respect. Santorum’s divisive and homophobic remarks do not befit a commander-in-chief.”
Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell banned gay, lesbian, and bisexual soldiers from serving their country. During it’s almost two-decade long life, America grew to despise the law, with 70% to 78% of the country wanting its repeal.

Coach Marc Introduces New Healthy Pancake Recipe

Remember momma's pancakes?  Well now you can stay on plan and enjoy yummy moist pancakes thanks to celebrity fitness expert Coach Marc.
 Oatmeal Pancakes

Coach Marc's Adapted & tweaked recipe from smittenkitchen.com
Makes about 18 pancakes
3/4 cup oat flour (you can make this by pulsing rolled oats into a food processor or spice grinder until finely ground; 1 cup of oats yielded 3/4 cup oat flour for me)
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 teaspoon baking powder
1 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly

1 1/4 cups fat free milk
1 cup cooked oatmeal*
1 tablespoon unsulphured (not blackstrap) molasses or 1 tablespoon honey
2 large eggs

Whisk the dry ingredients (oat flour, flour, sugar, baking powder and salt) together in a large bowl. In a smaller bowl, whisk the butter, milk, cooked oatmeal, honey and eggs together until thoroughly combined. Gently fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Using a light hand is important for tender pancakes; the batter should be slightly thick with a holey surface.

Heat a 10-inch cast-iron pan or griddle over medium heat until water sizzles when splashed onto the pan. Lower to medium-low. (This is my tip; I find pancakes impossible to cook well over higher heats). Rub the pan with Pam. Working quickly, dollop 1/4-cup mounds of batter onto the pan, 2 or 3 at a time. Once bubbles have begun to form on the top side of the pancake, flip the pancake and cook until the bottom is dark golden-brown, about 5 minutes total. Wipe the pan with a cloth before griddling the next pancake. Continue with the rest of the batter.

Serve the pancakes hot, straight from the skillet or keep them warm in a low oven. We also found these to reheat surprisingly well the next morning, again in a low oven.

Do ahead: Although the batter is best if using immediately, it can sit for up to 1 hour on the counter or overnight in the refrigerator. When you return to the batter, it will be very thick and should be thinned, one tablespoon at a time, with milk. Take care not to over mix.

* Make oatmeal, if you don’t have any leftover: Bring 2 cups of water, 1 cup of rolled oats and a pinch of salt to a boil and simmer on low for 5 minutes. Let cool. You’ll have some extra oatmeal, which you can eat while you’re cooking.
So, get cooking, get moving get M-Fitt! See you in the Academy real soon and let's get from strength to strength.

Green-glowing cats a new tool in AIDS research

Image: Green-glowing, genetically modified catU.S. scientists have developed a strain of green-glowing cats with cells that resist infection from a virus that causes feline AIDS, a finding that may help prevent the disease in cats and advance AIDS research in people.
The study, published Sunday in the journal Nature Methods, involved inserting monkey genes that block the virus into feline eggs, or oocytes, before they are fertilized.
The scientists also inserted jellyfish genes that make the modified cells glow an eerie green color — making the altered genes easy to spot.
Tests on cells taken from the cats show they are resistant to feline immunodeficiency virus, or FIV, which causes AIDS in cats.
"This provides the unprecedented capability to study the effects of giving AIDS-protection genes into an AIDS-vulnerable animal," Dr. Eric Poeschla of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, who led the study, said in a telephone interview.
Poeschla said that besides people, cats and to some extent, chimpanzees, are the only mammals that develop a naturally occurring virus that causes AIDS.
"Cats suffer from this all over the world," he said.

Just as the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV, does in people, FIV works by wiping out infection-fighting T-cells.
FIV infects mostly feral cats, of which there are half billion in the world, Poeschla said. It is transmitted by biting, largely by males defending their territory, but companion cats are affected as well.
In both humans and cats, proteins called restriction factors that normally fight off viral infections are defenseless against HIV and FIV because the viruses evolved potent counter-weapons. But certain monkey versions of these restriction factors are capable of fighting the virus and the team used one such gene from the rhesus monkey.
For the team, which included collaborators in Japan, the trick was to get the monkey gene for the restriction factor — known as TRIMCyp — into cats to block cells from becoming infected with the virus.

Green fluorescent protein gene To do that, they used a harmless virus to insert the genes into the eggs, a process that has already been done in other mammals including mice, pigs, sheep and marmoset monkeys.
To make it easier to check which cells had the monkey gene, the team also inserted a green fluorescent protein gene from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria that makes them glow green.
"We did it to mark cells easily just by looking under the microscope or shining a light on the animal."
The method worked so well nearly all offspring from the modified eggs have the restriction factor genes. And these defense proteins are made throughout the cat's body.
The team has mated two of the three original green-glowing cats, which have produced litters totaling eight kittens which make glowing cells as well.
But the point is not to breed generations of disease-resistant, glowing cats. Rather, the team plans to study these felines as a new way to develop treatments for HIV and the feline version of the disease.
Researchers said the work has several potential uses.
"This technology can be applied to a wide range of species, for many of which there are clear applications and potential benefits," Dr. Laurence Tiley of the University of Cambridge said in a statement.

"It will be interesting to see how enthusiastically this capability in cats is received and adopted by the HIV and neurobiological research communities and what other research opportunities it offers. A representative non-primate animal model would be a fantastic new tool for studying HIV pathogenesis."
So far, Poeschla's team has only tested cells taken from the animals and found they were resistant to FIV. But eventually they plan to expose the cats to the virus and see if they are protected.
"If you could show that you confer protection to these animals, it would give us a lot of information about protecting humans," Poeschla said.

For cats, this may eventually lead to gene therapy or new drug treatments for FIV, he said.

Gay Travel to Iran, I DON'T THINK SO....

Iran executes three men for sodomy
By Jerome Taylor

Iran’s judiciary have executed three men for sodomy in a case that sheds new light on the official persecution of gay men and women in the authoritarian Islamic Republic.

According to a news report carried by the Iranian Student News Agency, the men were put to death by hanging on Sunday morning at Karoun prison in the south western city of Ahvaz. The agency quoted Abdolhamid Amanat, an official at the prosecutor office in Khuzestan Province, as the source of the announcement.

In total six people were executed. According to the published charges, two men were put to death for robbery and rape and one was executed for drug trafficking.

But in an unusual announcement the prosecutor office also admitted that three other men were sentenced for “lavat”, the phrase used in Islamic law for sodomy. The names of the three men have not been given – only their initials M.T, T.T and M.Ch.

Human rights groups have said the case is significant because gay men that come before the courts are usually charged with acts such as sexual assault and rape – crimes that convey an element of coercion rather than consensual sex between two willing participants.

The recent Ahvaz executions, however, specifically refer to sections 108 and 110 of the Iranian penal code. Section 108 defines sodomy under Iran’s interpretation of Sharia law and the latter rules that the punishment for lavat is death. Previous executions of gay men usually quote sections of the Iranian penal code that refer to “lavat leh onf” - sodomy by coercion.

Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, a researcher at Iran Human Rights who is investigating the executions, told The Independent: “Iranian authorities have previously presented such cases as rape, in order to make the execution more acceptable and to avoid too much international attention, but this time the news is not presented as rape.”

He added: “This case is the only one in recent years where the only basis for the death sentence has been a sexual relationship between two men, with reference to the articles 108 and 110 of the Islamic Penal Code. These articles are very clear.”

Confirming executions of gay men and women inside Iran is notoriously difficult. Prosecutors often give scant information about the killings and because of the cultural stigma attached to homosexuality few families are willing to publicly come forward with details about whether their loved ones were executed for their sexual behaviour.

In 2005 Iran received widespread condemnation for the execution of two teenagers Mahmoud Asgari and Ayaz Marhoni, who were publicly hanged from a crane in a square at the centre of the city of Mashad. Gay rights groups claimed that the pair were murdered by the state for consensual sex but the charges against them were actually described as “lavat beh onf” against a 13-year-old boy. Although a number of human rights groups disagreed with gay rights groups over why the two boys were executed they nonetheless condemned the killings as a breach of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, both of which Iran is a signatory to.

Run by a strict interpretation of Sharia law, Iran remains one of the world’s largest executors with more than 180 people put to death so far this year. The province of Khuzestan, where ethnic Arabs are often persecuted by the authorities has a particularly high rate of killings.

Daniel Brett, director of the Ahwazi Arab Solidarity Network told the Gay Middle East website: “Ahvaz has the highest rate of executions in Iran, partly due to the persecution of the local Arab population and partly because prisoners from other parts of Iran are transported to the city – particularly the notorious Karoun prison where hangings are carried out in secret.”

According to Russian aviation officials, two passengers survived the crash, but are in critical condition. One of the survivors is Russian forward Alexander Galimov, who suffered burns across 80 percent of his body.

Yaroslavl airport, 150 miles (240 kilometers) northeast of Moscow. The Interstate Aviation Committee says the recorders are believed to be in the tail section of the jet, which is partly submerged in the river.
The victims included 36 players, coaches and officials of Yaroslavl Lokomotiv, which had been heading to Minsk, Belarus to play its opening game of the Kontinental Hockey League season.
On Thursday morning, hundreds of local residents gathered at the city's Russian Orthodox cathedral to mourn the victims. Many of them wore team scarves, some of the women using them to cover their heads as church ritual requires.

In recent years, Russia and some other former Soviet republics have had some of the world's worst air traffic safety records. Experts blame the age of the aircraft, weak government controls, poor pilot training and a cost-cutting mentality.

The crashed jet was built in 1993 and one of its three engines was replaced a month ago, Deputy Transport Minister Valery Okulov told Russian media on Thursday. It is unclear whether technical failure played a role in the crash, but the plane apparently struggled to gain altitude and then hit a signal tower before breaking apart along the Volga.

Okulov said federal transportation authorities are considering whether to halt flights by Yak-42s, Okulov was quoted as saying by the state news agency RIA Novosti. There are 57 of the planes in service in Russia, the agency said.

There were only two crash survivors and both were reported as being in serious condition on Thursday.
Among the dead were Lokomotiv coach and NHL veteran Brad McCrimmon, a Canadian; assistant coach Alexander Karpovtsev, one of the first Russians to have his name etched on the Stanley Cup as a member of the New York Rangers; and Pavol Demitra, who played for the St. Louis Blues and the Vancouver Canucks and was the Slovakian national team captain.

Other standouts killed were Czech players Josef Vasicek, Karel Rachunek and Jan Marek, Swedish goalie Stefan Liv, Latvian defenseman Karlis Skrastins and defenseman Ruslan Salei of Belarus.
Russia was hoping to showcase Yaroslavl as a modern and vibrant city this week at an international forum attended by heads of state, including Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, so the crash came as a particularly bitter blow. The forum is being held in the hockey arena.
Medvedev has announced plans to take aging Soviet-built planes out of service starting next year. The short- and medium-range Yak-42 has been in service since 1980 and about 100 are still being used by Russian carriers.

The crash is one of the worst aviation disasters in sports history.
In past plane crashes involving sports teams, 75 Marshall University football players, coaches, fans and airplane crew died in West Virginia on Nov. 14, 1970, while returning from a game. Thirty-six of the dead were players.

Thirty members of a Uruguayan rugby club were killed in a crash in the Andes in 1972.
The entire 18-member U.S. figure skating team died in a crash on their way to the 1961 world championships in Brussels, and 18 members of the Torino soccer team died near Turin, Italy, in a 1949 crash.

In 1980, 14 members of the U.S. amateur boxing team were killed in a crash in Warsaw, Poland.
A plane crash in 1950 near the Russian city of Sverdlovsk, now called Yekaterinburg, killed 13 players and officials in the Soviet air force's ice hockey squad. A Munich air crash in 1958 cost eight Manchester United players their lives.

Mouthwatering Watermelon facts!

By Jennifer Gruenemay

Is there anything better on a hot summer’s day than a cold slice of watermelon, dripping with sweet juices and calling out your name? Well, possibly a nice cool dip in the lake. But what could be better than having watermelon at the lake on a hot summer’s day? Not much. While you may be thinking that an ice-cream cone would be a mighty tasty cool-down treat, don’t forget this seasonal equation: summer + swimming = bathing suit season. Not only is watermelon a fat-free, figure-friendly food, unlike ice-cream, it’s also bursting with flavor and a variety of nutrients. And, being 92% percent water, this summertime melon easily satisfies both your hunger and thirst…

Watermelon 101A member of the Cucurbitaceae family, watermelon is related botanically to cucumber and squash, which are incidentally fruits, not vegetables.
Watermelon is thought to be native to Africa, where this water-yielding fruit was commonly used by natives as a valuable means of carrying water.
Today, there are more than 200 varieties of watermelon grown around the world, with 50 varieties making their home in the U.S.
Does thumping on melons really help to choose a tasty fruit? Actually, yes. Ripe melons that are ready to eat will have a hollow sound when given a firm thump.
Other ways to tell if your watermelon is ripe is to test the weight of the fruit – it should feel heavy for its size, indicating that its flesh is bursting with sweet juices.
Flip the fruit around in your hands to find the spot where the melon sat on the ground. If this spot is white, the melon is not yet ripe. However, if this spot has turned yellow, the fruit is indeed ripe and ready for your picnic table.
There are literally hundreds of ways to enjoy a good watermelon, from dicing it up for fruit salads, puréeing the flesh for frozen slushies or  cold soups, or even roasting the seeds (like is done with pumpkin seeds).
But the best way to really enjoy watermelon is simply to cut into smile-sized wedges, grab the rinds with both hands, and dive in face-first. For more fun with watermelon, try this tasty recipe: Melon Kebabs with Yogurt Dipping Sauce.
Nutritional Benefits

Watermelon, like tomatoes, is a rich source of the carotenoid Lycopene, offering about 7.4mg per one cup of fruit. What might surprise you is that watermelon actually has about 60% more lycopene than raw tomatoes (cooked tomatoes are more lycopene-rich).
Not only is watermelon rich in this cancer-fighting carotenoid, it’s also a good source of vitamin C, potassium, fiber and even supplies a small amount of calcium.

Have you ever considered taking steroids to get a perfect body?

How to build muscle now

(ARA) -  With the recent media coverage exposing steroid use in professional sports, many everyday people are looking for an extra edge to build muscle, get stronger and look better.
Steroids, although effective, are unhealthy and illegal to use without a prescription. Millions of dollars have been spent in sports medicine research to find a completely safe, natural alternative that produces the same results.

After years of research, scientists now agree that nitric oxide supplements are a safe way to maximize your muscle gains.
Mixed martial arts champion BJ Penn started using a nitric oxide supplement called Force Factor last year. Penn recently said, "Force Factor is the absolute best product to hit the market in years."

Other athletes like basketball Rookie of the Year Derrick Rose and professional football player Vernon Davis are just now discovering the dramatic benefits of using a nitric oxide supplement. Davis has been an advocate of Force Factor since first taking it, telling his teammates in San Francisco, "Force Factor has proven results. I believe in results." See if you qualify for a free bottle of Force Factor.
The science behind nitric oxide
Your body naturally produces nitric oxide to move oxygen into your muscles while you exercise. This burst of oxygen keeps your muscles functioning while lifting weights or through your cardio session.
Unfortunately, your body can only generate a limited amount of nitric oxide. When the nitric oxide runs out your muscles can no longer power through the exercise no matter how much mental determination you have. Taking a nitric oxide supplement 30 minutes before your workout could be the push your body needs to add weight to your bench press or run that extra mile. This increased stamina results in longer, harder workouts and a better body in less time.

The benefits of nitric oxide supplements:

    •    Drastic muscle gains
    •    Increased blood flow and oxygen delivery to muscles
    •    Transforms your body
    •    Boosted strength, endurance and power
    •    Supports immune system

What's the best nitric oxide product? Now that the science behind nitric oxide has been proved, several companies are rushing to bring a nitric oxide supplement to consumers, but which is the best?
Force Factor is the most popular nitric oxide supplement available. Thousands of people have already bought Force Factor online or from their local GNC. In fact, Force Factor recently won GNC's "Rising Star Award" because of its breakthrough muscle-building formula.

Professional basketball and football players, as well as several mixed martial arts fighters, have all said that Force Factor works for them. Will you continue to struggle at the gym, or will you take this opportunity to finally see the results you want?

You can get a free, 14-day sample of Force Factor when you click here.

We all Deserve the Freedom To Marry

State justices seem to favor allowing proponents to defend Prop. 8

A proponent of Prop. 8 demonstrates
The California Supreme Court appeared inclined Tuesday to give sponsors of ballot initiatives the right to defend them in court, a key issue in the federal dispute over Proposition 8.
During an hour of arguments, several state high court justices suggested the initiative system would be rendered meaningless if there was no one to defend ballot measures from court challenges.
This would be a victory for proponents of Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage, because it allows them to appeal last year's ruling overturning the ballot measure.
California Gov. Jerry Brown and Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris have refused to challenge a federal district judge’s decision last year overturning Proposition 8.
A federal appeals court must now decide whether ProtectMarriage, the group that sponsored Proposition 8, has standing to appeal that order in federal court.
The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals asked the California court to rule on the status of initiative sponsors in state court.
The California court’s decision is likely to influence the 9th Circuit's decision on whether ProtectMarriage has standing in federal court.
If the appeals court finds ProtectMarriage lacks the right to appeal, the district court's order declaring Proposition 8 unconstitutional will remain in place, legal analysts said. But the dispute won't affect marriage rights beyond California.
